Summer Hair Care Tips
Our Favorite time of the year is finally here- Summer!
Here are some good reasons to pay more attention to your hair in summer... heat, salt and chlorine! While the integrity of your tresses suffer in the winter too, summers offerings are much more unforgiving. Your hair is exposed to more outside elements in the summer, because we are outside more. "This is why we need to switch up our hair care regime in the summer months," says Mindy Lindner, hairstylist at Studio 3 a Redken salon in Sacramento's Elk Grove.
The sun wreaks havoc on our hair naturally so here are some summer hair musts on maintaining attractive lush hair this season.
Use hair products that contain SPF protection or contain high amounts of Shea Butter a natural sun shield. Hair can get sunburn just like skin. Oil and wet your hair before swimming in a pool or ocean. If your hair is wet before you enter, it won’t soak up as much chlorine or salt.
After swimming use a CLAIFIFYING shampoo every time to ensure you are washing out the chlorine/salt. Chlorine will severely dry hair out if not properly washed away. It is a good idea to leave conditioner in longer then you normally would if able to. Such as sleeping with conditioner in your hair in a protective bun or shower cap. Your hair will thank you in the morning.
Avoid washing your hair to often and in hot water, as this can be drying for your long locks! You can rinse away product and debris with a double conditioning rinse in place of shampoo. This will give you a fresh start great for curly or straight textures.
Limit your use of "hot" tools. Washing at night to give time for air-drying and then if you must use a curling or flat iron in the morning so you are at least cutting down on damage by half. Before doing so make sure you have a leave in condition and silker on your dry hair to give added protection.
Deep condition your hair weekly with heat. Purchase a hooded hair dryer at your local beauty supply and some plastic shower caps. Spending 15 minutes a week under the dryer will dramatically rejuvenate dry hair.
Mix it up and give a hot oil treatment instead! Rotating between the deep conditioning treatments and oil is a great idea.
Stay on top of your trims! Every 6-8 weeks max! To avoid split ends traveling up the hair shaft. This is where the oil plays a huge roll, oil has the ability to penetrate and delay the split from moving up the hair shaft at a much slower rate.
